Bought an Arista 7280TR on Ebay

Summary: It works, one issue: the rack mount kit shipped only includes the part that attaches to the device. The part that mounts to the rack itself is missing.

I received the package, and the shipping container appeared in good condition with adequate padding. However, I noticed that the rack mount brackets were slightly bent, though there were no other visible signs of major damage.

I powered on the device using one PSU, and immediately, a large puff of smoke came out from the front of the device. The fans blew the smoke directly into my face, causing me to start coughing.

I quickly yanked out the power cable and let out a few choice words.

Upon disassembling the unit, I noticed some black residue in front of the PSU I had powered up. It resembled toner cartridge powder.

I removed the PSU, cleaned off the black residue, and then swapped the other PSU into the slot where the first one had been. After doing this, everything worked perfectly. I upgraded the firmware, verified that all 56 ports were active, and confirmed that traffic was passing through. The fans, however, were running at 100%. After consulting with my local Arista contact, I learned that with only one PSU, the “fan-speed auto” feature does not function.

I then disassembled the PSU that had emitted the smoke. There was no visible damage to any components, but I found more of the black residue inside. I used compressed air to clean out the PSU, reconnected the power cable, and the PSU booted up normally. The fan started, and the LEDs seemed to be functioning properly. Perhaps it’s still operational?

I reinserted the PSU into the Arista, and it worked fine. With both PSUs functioning, the fans settled at 30% instead of running at full speed.
